Dark Days Loom Ahead in The Secret World
Funcom has taken the wraps cancelled of The Secret World, an modern-twenty-four hour period MMOG that posits the call into question: What if all myth, conspiracy theory and urban caption was true?
We've noted active Funcom's alternate-reality MMORPG (that may or may not constitute connected to cult classic adventure The Longest Journey) for a while now, just it wasn't until last weekend at Kiss of peace that the game was officially disclosed. Spell it's sure enough means too early to pass whatsoever rather judgment on the spunky, what little we've seen is looking jolly darn cool.
The game doesn't call for place in a foreign populace like Norrath or Azeroth, but rather in our selfsame personal world in the instant day – just a world where every petite bit of mythology and caption is typical. From the official site:
Imagine if every myth, conspiracy theory and urban legend was true. Imagine if your worst nightmare came to life-time. Imagine a world where vampires hunt for individual origin in dingy London nightclubs, where werewolves lurk in the sewers beneath Seoul, and where the undead prey along the living in the shadows of Greater New York. This is the premise for «The Hole-and-corner Public», Funcom's upcoming massively multiplayer online game set in the modern daylight real life.
Thespian characters will live able to "throw themselves" into the bustling nightlives of both of the world's biggest urban areas, and shop for fiery katanas and powerful reflexive rifles alongside shopping for the most stylish new outfits (presumably). Beyond shopping, though, they'll too be able to bring together secret societies like the Illuminati, the Dragon and the Templars (the three disclosed thus Army for the Liberation of Rwanda) systematic to, uh, mess more or less creatures of myth and legend up.
From the screenshots we've seen thusly ALIR, it's got a pretty cool visual style, and let's present it: Any game that lets you take on a golem made from what looks like the concrete remnants of presumably a bridge or other building, is a game that earns points in my book.
Funcom has an berth down hither in Durham, North Carolina – otherwise known as The Escapist home turf – so who knows? We might just fell away and see if we privy arrest some dirt on this selfsame unequaled-looking for MMORPG sometime presently. Stay tuned.
